A NYE CHALLENGE: Skipping the Sequins
Today’s post is all about challenging the one holiday we never question what to wear:
New Year’s Eve!
In last week’s post, I helped the stylish procrastinator in all of us dress for the last minute (or recently uncovered under a stack of mail) holiday party invites, starting with pieces already in our own closets.
Personally, I love a sequin dress as much as the next gal, but I was curious to see if I could find some viable options with other trends that are equally as festive and fun. I chose the neon, rainbow, and vinyl trends to put to the test.
Below I’ve assembled outfits from each trend, varying in degree of intensity. Every photo is clickable, but items are linked as well.
Whether you’re testing the waters or feeling bold, try a new look to ring in a new year!

Buzzing Like Neon
Never thought I would embrace this trend but that’s what I love about fashion! Keep this trend modern with classic silhouettes and lady-like finishes.
Testing the Waters
Pink Mod Earrings | Silk Camisole | Pink Nail Polish | Metallic Pink Envelope Clutch | Black Jean | Pink Feathered Sequin Heels
If you’re testing out this trend, my advice is to stick to the accessories and let your outfit talk with one neon color. Pink is a solid choice because it pairs beautifully to an all black outfit. If you’re not up for raising the bar (below) but want to add a small tweak: try this look with a neon pink bardot top!
Raising the Bar
Blue Strappy Heels | Yellow Tassel Earrings | Bomber Butterfly Jacket | Metallic Blue Crossbody | Blue+Yellow Cutout Dress | Blue Nail Polish
Upping the ante! Pink two neon colors, signaling out one more than the other. Cobalt is a great centerpiece and lemon is the perfect highlighter for this outfit. The butterfly bomber gives this look a sporty touch!
Feeling Bold
Snakeskin Clutch | White Camisole | Pink/Green Hoop Earrings | Coral Nail Polish | Pink Tie Heels | Green Pleated Midi Skirt
The key to this bold look is the feminine silhouette and footwear! Finish your look with a white belt (splurge!) and you might give the Queen a run for her money.
MORE NEON
Color Saturation: +100%
Nothing makes a statement like wearing nearly every color all at once! If you lean on the 60’s and 70’s era of silhouettes, this look will definitely make a statement.
Testing the Waters
Metallic Clutch | High Waisted Pencil Skirt | Rainbow Trim Crop Camisole | Rainbow Nail Polish | Rainbow Drop Earrings | Rainbow Embellished Strappy Heels
The key with this look is a little of this and a little of that. Rainbow sprinkled throughout your whole look! If you’re wanting to amp it up a dash, try a metallic rainbow clutch instead.
Raising the Bar
White Lock Clutch | Rainbow Strappy Heel | Iridescent Nail Polish | Rainbow Peplum Top | Iridescent Drop Earrings | Skinny Jeans
This look is so fun from the heels to the peplum top! The key here is to mix in an oil slick accents to catch the light in rainbow hues without being over the top. If you feel like you can handle a little more color, try this look with the matching metallic rainbow mini skirt!
Feeling Bold
White Nail Polish | Rainbow Bucket Bag | Transparent Ankle Boot | Rainbow Checkerboard Dress | Rainbow Resin Drop Earrings | Rainbow Baguette Ring
Just add a pixie haircut and you’re basically Twiggy! I may request this look to be buried in.
MORE RAINBOW
Testing the Waters
Crimson Nail Polish | Ankle Wrap Heels | Druzy Earrings | Studded Bandage Dress | Red Patent Top Handle Bag | Vinyl Moto Jacket
This might be the easiest trend on the guide to adopt first seeing as most of us have patent leather heels or bag in our closet. Compliment this look with crimson red and studded details.
Raising the Bar
Orange Shimmer Nail Polish | Navy Drop Earrings | Navy Peplum Hem Midi Dress | Orange Vinyl Belt | Navy Patent Clutch | Vinyl Multicolor Heels
This might be my favorite look on this guide! From the shoes to the belted peplum hem midi dress, this outfit is a showstopper. Sexy and fashion forward, you can’t go wrong with this combo.
Feeling Bold
Orange Patent Zip Skirt | Plaid Crossbody | White Mod Earrings | B+W Patent Mules | Tie Neck Blouse | Vinyl Cap
Whew. Another favorite look of mine. Again, I went retro with the styling of this look! The key here is to let the orange speak for itself with black and white accents to keep the statement free of clutter.
